PORTSMOUTH — A large bus driven by members of the New Hampshire chapter of the public policy group Americans for Prosperity rolled up to Sean Mahoney's driveway on Saturday draped in a banner communicating the message they want all New Hampshire residents to read: "Tell Congress: Hands Off My Health Care."

Mahoney welcomed the group as part of an anti-health care reform bill rally he hosted. Corey Lewandowski, the New Hampshire state director of Americans for Prosperity, said the bus made its first stop in Portland, Maine, and continued on to towns and cities across New Hampshire, including the Portsmouth visit.

Former N.H. Sen. Gordon Humphrey spoke at the rally, which was also attended by former Manchester Republican Mayor Frank Guinta, who is running for Congress against incumbent Democrat Carol Shea-Porter.

Guinta and others expressed dismay about Shea-Porter's decision to back the health care reform bill, which is also supported by U.S. Paul Hodes, D-NH. The U.S. House was expected to vote on the bill today.

"She needs to come back to New Hampshire and have open town hall meetings so that people can give their views — and then she should vote on behalf of the people. Ignoring the people of New Hampshire is disingenuous and wrong," Guinta said of Shea-Porter.

Mahoney echoed Guinta's sentiments, adding, "I'm very disappointed in our congresswoman. She waited until the last minute to show her support and that's because she knows it's unpopular. She will pay a price at the polls for this."

Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., who was the keynote speaker at a Republican fund-raising event in Bedford Friday night, addressed the estimated 50 people gathered via a conference call from Washington, D.C.

As of the 10:30 a.m. phone call, Pence said he believed the bill would not pass through the House by the weekend's end.

Humphrey called on American people "to not only push back, but to shove back," against a government-mandated health care system.

Bruce Haedrich and his wife, Catherine, were among the first to arrive at the rally. The Eliot, Maine, residents said they often attend rallies and have previously mobilized in opposition of the bill.

Haedrich said he isn't against health care reform, but called the proposed bill "unconstitutional."

"Our politicians took an oath of office to defend the Constitution. They're not defending the Constitution if they're trying to get around it," he said.

House leaders announced Saturday afternoon that there will be a vote on the bill, dispelling the notion that the House would push the bill through without a vote.

Nancy and Warren Kindler of Epping came to the rally with a sign reading "Keep our 10 grandchildren free, don't trod on me."

The couple expressed concerns that the bill would raise taxes in the long run and accumulate debt for future generations.

"We have 10 grandchildren in states across this great nation — a huge family. We're very concerned for our grandchildren because they're never going to be able to pay for this," said Nancy Kindler.
